Through the centuries, the chile pepper has been prescribed to treat ailments from jaundice and malaria, to ulcers and the common cold. The Mayans and Aztecs used mashed hot peppers for many problems such as muscle and skeletal pain and toothaches by creating a paste to rub onto the effected area!
The active ingredient in chile peppers as medicine is the same chemical that makes it hot! Capsaisin, (cap say sin) is chemically 18H27O3N. Doctors think that capsaisin blocks the nerve endings that send pain messages. By designing molecules that block capsaisin receptors, doctors may be able to develop new pain medications.
Now there is evidence that joint and arthritis pain and muscle stiffness can be helped with the daily use of a cream that contains capsaisin, a chile pepper extract. Capsaisin cream is sold over the counter under the name Zostrix. It has been proven with research, that a diet that includes chile peppers helps in lowering high blood pressure, and reduces the risk of some kinds of cancer.
